H. Poghosian: Inclusion of mosque in Yerevan on UNESCO list is important
“Armenia will do its best in the near future so that the Iranian “Blue Mosque” in Yerevan will be included on the UNESCO’s cultural heritage list,” Armenian Minister of Culture Ms. Hasmik Poghosian told “Armenpress” news agency.
She attached importance to this process, noting that during her working visit to Iran in the autumn of 2012 she had the opportunity to familiarize herself with the problems of preservation of Armenian historical and cultural heritage on the spot.
“Iran is one of those few countries where Armenian churches, schools, and educational-cultural centers are treated with great care. They have preserved our monuments very well,” the minister stressed.
“All our monuments and church complexes in Iran will be regularly included in the UNESCO lists,” the minister said, adding that this is a serious step and it makes the Armenian side implement similar measures.
The Blue Mosque is the only house of worship for Muslims in Yerevan. All the Muslims living in Armenia attend it. The Blue Mosque is the largest in the Caucasus.
