Expert: Tension between Turkey and Israel not in Washington’s interest
The relationship between Turkey and Israel has never been especially stable and smooth, but it has always been based on military and economic cooperation, Turkologist Andranik Ispirian said at a meeting with reporters today, when commenting on the tendency to improvement in Turkish-Israeli relations and the latest political developments in the Middle East.
He said Turkey and Israel are important strategic allies of the U.S. in the Middle East and tension between those two states would not be in Washington’s interest in terms of implementing the Greater Middle East program and the Arab Spring.
In the expert’s words, the Syrian problem is of importance to the U.S. and for that reason the U.S. is trying to reconcile Turkey and Israel in order to close ranks against Syria.
Discusing the developments in the Middle East, Ispirian said it is impossible to carry out an “Arab Spring” in Iran because the prerequisites, which existed in the countries where the Arab Spring occurred, are absent in Iran.
“Discontent with the Iranian authorities is not as widespread as in Arab states. Besides, Iran is a different state, with a different model of government,” the expert stressed.
