A contemporary Golgotha: Anniversary of Maragha Massacre
"Baroness Caroline Cox called the Maragha Massacre committed on April 10, 1992, a contemporary Golgotha,” the first Ombudsperson of Armenia Ms. Larisa Alaverdian said at a press conference today.
According to her, everyone was so shocked by the mass murder of ethnic Armenians in the village of Maragha by Azerbaijani troops that even the death of First Secretary of the Nagorno Karabakh’s Supreme Council Arthur Mkrtchian was said to be caused by the painful impressions left by those tragic events.
“Azerbaijanis committed genocide against peaceful, defenseless residents of Maragha. They killed Maragha residents by using cruelest methods: people were burned alive, dismembered, which was later proven as a result of exhumation,” L. Alaverdian said.
In her words, everybody was stunned by the horrific scenes. She noted that in 1997 Against Legal Arbitrariness NGO prepared a package of legal documents on the Maragha events and filed it to the United Nations. Ms. Alaverdian stressed that of the 59 villagers taken hostage, 19 were never returned, and dozens of books can be written based on recollections of Maragha hostages.
“The Information and Public Relations Center of the Presidential Administration and the Center’s Head Ara Saghatelian did considerable work to make a film about the Maragha events. I am glad to be able to cooperate with them during the shooting of a series of films,” Larisa Alaverdian stated.
