Yerevan hosts conference under Armenia’s Chairmanship of CoE CM

A conference entitled “The European Legal Standards of the Rule of Law and the Scope of Discretion of Powers in the Member States of the Council of Europe” started today in Yerevan. The event is being held under Armenia’s Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan made a welcoming speech. He stated that Armenia’s Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe is a great honor.

“During the six months of our chairmanship we will launch proposals that will become a new stimulus for the further development and strengthening of the European system of values and the observance of the principle of the rule of law,” the president said.
“I am convinced that in all democratic countries the essence of the rule of law is stipulated at the constitutional level one way or the other, but the main goal is its implementation. With this aim, new democratic states need to do regular and consistent work and have an independent court system and ensure the impartial administration of justice,” S. Sargsyan said.

In his words, Armenia has entered a new stage of reforms. “Their key factors are man and the creation of such an atmosphere in Armenia, in which tolerance, pluralism, justice and mutual trust will prevail, “the president stated.
