Police investigate assault on activists Saghatelian and Arshamian
An investigation into the September 5 assault on civic activists Haykak Arshamian and Suren Saghatelian is being conducted, with forensic tests to be done, according to the Armenian police.
At 10:20 pm on September 5, the central police station received a phone call from Suren S., 37, who said that he and Haykak S. were attacked and beaten by 6 or 7 men at the intersection of Ter-Gabrielian and Koghbatsi Streets in Yerevan.
An hour later the same police station received information from University Hospital No 1 that Haykak A. and Suren S. were admitted to the hospital with multiple traumatic injuries.
Aysor.am was informed by hospital personnel that Suren Saghatelian has not yet been discharged from the hospital. He suffered maxillofacial injuries and has a broken nose.
According to PastInfo news agency, Suren Saghatelian and Haykak Arshamian were among participants of the protest “We are against Armenia’s membership of the Customs Union”.
We would remind you that at the September 3 meeting in Moscow, Presidents of Armenia and Russia, Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, discussed the state and prospects of bilateral allied partnership and issues of foreign-policy interaction. The heads of the two states confirmed the intention of Yerevan and Moscow to further develop economic integration processes in the Eurasian space.
In accordance with a joint statement, President Sargsyan stated about Armenia’s Ddcision to join the Customs Union and take the necessary practical steps for that purpose and later to take part in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Community. President Putin supported the decision of the Republic of Armenia and expressed the Russian side’s willingness to assist with that process in every way.
