Yeghnukian demands prosecution of authors of placard
Karo Yeghnukian, a member of Pre-Parliament civic initiative and Let’s Liberate Monument from Oligarch social movement, sent letters to the prosecutor general and the Armenian police chief, asking them to prosecute the persons who attached a placard with his photo to the façade of the Central (Closed) Market in downtown Yerevan.
Yeghnukian claims that the placard was placed with the aim of ‘inciting hatred, discrimination and violence’ against him.
The placard with a photo of Karo Yeghnukian has been on the market’s façade for several days. The placard says: “Mason. No to hired opponents! No to foreign spies! You are against creation of 700 jobs”.
The situation related to the Closed Market remains unsettled. Concerned over the fate of the historic and cultural monument, citizens initiated Let’s Liberate Monument from Oligarch movement.
Yet the protest scheduled for September 2 didn’t take place: activists did not attend the rally announced in advance because the area was thronged with supporters of parliamentary deputy Samvel Alexanian whose family is said to own the historic building.
The Closed Market was built in 1952. Its designer is Honored Architect of Armenia Grigory Aghababian. The Closed Market was included in the list of Yerevan’s historic sites and is considered one of the symbols of the capital city.
