Killing of anti-fascist activist sparks clashes in Greece
Protesters clashed with Greek police on Wednesday evening in a working-class Athens suburb where a 34-year-old hip-hop performer and anti-fascist activist had been stabbed to death earlier, allegedly by a supporter of the extreme right-wing Golden Dawn party, CNN reported.
Police have arrested a 45-year-old man who they say admitted to the killing and claimed to be a supporter of the far-right political party.
Anti-fascist activist Pavlos Fyssas, well known as a hip-hop artist with the stage name Killah P, died in a state hospital after being stabbed twice outside a cafe in the working-class Keratsini area west of Athens. The stabbing came after a brawl that had started over a football game.
The killing took place amid concern over rising extremism in Greece, now is its sixth consecutive year of recession.
Following the stabbing, police raided a number of Golden Dawn offices looking for possible links to the crime.
Thousands of protesters held anti-fascist demonstrations in Fyssas' memory in Keratsini and several other Greek cities on Wednesday evening, with some of the demonstrations turning violent. In Keratsini, the violence was concentrated near the scene of the stabbing, with anti-fascist protesters hurling rocks at riot police and burning bins outside a police station.
