Poghosian: Egg price hike is illogical and unfounded
Measures are needed to prevent large business entities from swallowing up smaller ones. The appropriate bodies don’t respond rapidly. These bodies together with NGOs should work jointly and conduct frequent checks so as to ensure tangible results, Chairman of Union of Consumers NGO Armen Poghosian said at a meeting with journalists, when speaking about the recent price hikes.
According to Poghosian, a growth in prices of all foods, except granulated sugar, has been recorded, whereas food prices have fallen 10-15% in international market. Speaking about the chicken egg price hike, the NGO head noted that Armenia has turned from an egg exporting country into an importing one, with chicken eggs being imported mostly from Bulgaria.
‘There are 17 egg production companies in Armenia. 6 of them are dictating companies in the market,” Poghosian said, adding that last year the State Food Safety Inspection fined all egg production companies equally, as a result of which small companies went bankrupt, and the commodity turnover of medium ones has declined.
‘The egg price hike is illogical and unfounded. There are no objective reasons for a price growth. The price hike is a result of badly organized policy,” Armen Poghosian said in conclusion.
