Cassation Court accepts Grisha Virabian’s complaint for examination
Armenia’s Court of Cassation on October 24 accepted for examination the complaint of opposition activist Grisha Virabian who had emigrated to Belgium, Aysor.am was informed by Arsen Babayan, the head of the RA Judicial Department’s International Cooperation and PR Service.
The Sirunian legal advice office filed on September 6 a complaint, asking the Court of Cassation to review the criminal case in view of new circumstances.
Let us remind you that in December of 2012, the European Court of Human Rights sustained the claim of former member of the People’s Party of Armenia, Grisha Virabian - who was granted political asylum in Belgium - against the Armenian government. The ECHR ruled that the government must pay 25 thousand Euros as a moral compensation to the plaintiff and 6 thousand Euros in compensation for legal costs (a total sum of 31 thousand Euros).
According to the ECHR website, when examining the Grisha Virabian case, the ECHR found violations of several articles of the European Convention on Human Rights. G. Virabian participated in a protest on Baghramian Avenue in Yerevan on April 12, 2004. He was detained by law enforcers, beaten up by policemen and taken to the Artashat city hospital with multiple injuries.
