Court of Appeals leaves V. Sedrakian’s sentence unchanged
Armenia’s Court of Appeals today announced its decision on the case of former presidential candidate, epos expert Vardan Sedrakian. The court left unchanged the ruling of the court of general jurisdiction of Kentron and Nork-Marash administrative districts in Yerevan.
The court of general jurisdiction had sentenced Vardan Sedrakian to 14 years in prison. The two other men involved in Paruyr Hayrikian’s attempted murder – Khachatur Poghosian and Samvel Harutyunian had received 12 and 13 years in prison, respectively.
According to the criminal case materials, while running in the presidential elections due on February 18, 2013, Vardan Sedrakian in early January 2013 told his acquaintances S. Harutyunian and K. Poghosian to kill another presidential candidate, leader of AIM Party Paruyr Hayrikian.
V. Sedrakian’s lawyer, Alexander Sirunian earlier declared that he intended to file an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights if they fail to achieve success in Armenian courts.
