Yerevan metro staff opposed to compulsory pension scheme
A group of employees were holding today a protest outside the head office of the Yerevan Metro after Karen Demirchian. They were protesting against the introduction of the compulsory accumulative pension system in Armenia. The metro employees were joined by members of I’m against (Dem.am) initiative.
Metro employees believe that compulsory deductions from their salaries for pension are a violation of their rights.
In their words, they are discontented with the new law on the compulsory accumulative pension system, rather than with the amount of deductions. One of the protesters noted that he can keep the deducted amount of 5,000 drams in his pocket as well. “If I cannot support my child today, why should I care about a pension I will receive in 30 years? If I have the opportunity, I will save this money today so that I or my child will live better in 30 years,” the worker said.
The metro staff called on all the employers to adhere to the decisions of the Constitutional Court instead of paying heed to the State Revenue Committee or other bodies.
