IOC hails Sochi Olympics a 'great success' so far
The International Olympic Committee has hailed the Sochi Winter Games as "a great success" so far, R-Sport reported, according to RIA Novosti.
“We are now four days into the Games and are very satisfied with the way they are unfolding,” said President Thomas Bach in an IOC statement.
“In light of the great success so far, I have decided to cancel the regular coordination meetings between the IOC and Sochi 2014 until further notice.”
Some criticism of infrastructure preparation at the Black Sea resort on the part of Games organizers has faded as attention has turned to the sporting action, which has won near-universal praise for its excitement.
The new events of slopestyle and team figure skating have proven welcome additions to the Olympic program among athletes and media alike after they were given slots in the schedule early in the Games.
The only concerns aired about the competition have been about low spectator turnouts in some events, though organizers have attributed the empty seat problem, which also featured at the London 2012 Olympics, to a Russian tradition of turning up late.
The Sochi Olympics opened on February 7 and run until February 23.
