Armenian traffic police impose fines on cars sold long ago
Several dozen Armenian drivers have received notices about the fines imposed for nonpayment of insurance payments for their cars, which were sold decades ago, the chairman of League for Protection of Motorists’ Rights NGO Tigran Hovhannisian told a press conference today.
“The problem arose on January 1, 2014 when a decision was taken that all vehicles must be insured regardless of whether they are used or not”, Tigran Hovhannisian said. According to the NGO chairman, many of such drivers applied to the traffic police, but the answer was: “Look for your car”.
Driver Sargis Machkalian said at the press conference that he sold his car as long ago as 1998, but he received today a notice about the fine for nonpayment for his insurance policy.
S. Machkalian said that his mistake lay in not renaming his car: “Let them impose a fine once and settle the issue. How many times should I pay for a nonexistent car?”
