Food security improving program starts in Armenia
A four-year program ‘Improving Regional Food Security through National Strategies and Small Holder Production in the South Caucasus’ was launched in Armenia today.
According to Margarita Hakobian, a representative of Oxfam international organization’s Yerevan Office, one of the program’s main goals is to involve small farmers, including women farmers, in the development and implementation of the food security strategy.
The head of Armenian Agriculture Ministry’s Program Development Department Hrachia Tspnetsian said for his part that food security is an important component of national security, while the measures to be taken under the new program are in line with the main directions and theses of Armenia’s state agrarian policy.
The purpose of the EU-funded program to be implemented by Armenian Agriculture Ministry jointly with Oxfam is optimize food security conditions in Armenia, eliminate the risks of a food crisis, and boost local food production. The program’s budget is over 596,000 euros.
