The reason why square was named after Yanukovych
'Haykakan Zhamanak’ asked the spokesman for Spitak city municipality Hovhannes Khoyetsian to answer a number of questions related to Yanukovych Square in Spitak.
When asked why the square was named after Viktor Yanukovych, the spokesman replied that after the 1988 earthquake, Yanukovych was responsible for rescue and construction work in Spitak, he helped the city in a difficult moment, and he is also an honorary citizen.
In response to the remark that the square was named in his honor only in 2006 and nobody remembered Yanukovych before that, H. Khoyetsian said that in 2006 Yanukovych was already Ukrainian prime minister so Spitak residents proposed naming a square after him, and the council of elders took such a decision.
