G. Makarian: Process of entry into Customs Union should be suspended
The U.S. will do everything to weaken the Customs Union so the process of Armenia’s entry into the CU should be suspended, the chairman of Union of Armenia’s Employers Gagik Makarian told reporters today.
In his words, the U.S. and Europe will continue to exert pressure on Russia until the Russian economy weakens or democratic movements start there, while the economic weakening will affect Armenia’s economy as well, increasing poverty in the country.
Makarian noted that Iran has made correct moves concerning the U.S. so the Armenian authorities should take Iran seriously - this country may become a counterbalance to the U.S. and Turkey.
According to Makarian, it follows from the Russian authorities’ steps that they are not interested very much in developing the Armenian economy.
“All the large projects of Russia such as gas, Mars Plant and the railway are not noted for their effectiveness. Much money is spent on such a large system as railways, but trains move at a low speed as in the 18th century. The electric networks operate at a loss, they supply low-quality electricity below standard, while gas is sold in Armenia at the maximum price,’ the union chairman said.
