Gas consumption falls in Armenia, despite severe winter
Armenia’s population consumed 222 million cubic meters of natural gas in the first three months of 2014. Gas consumption fell by 3.2% as compared with the first quarter of last year, according to ArmRosGazprom Company. It is noteworthy that this winter was colder than last one. The fall in gas consumption is due to the sharp rise in gas prices in July 2013.
“No less important is the fact that gas consumption by our industry in the same period amounted to 49 million cubic meters, declining by about 30% compared with last year. This decline shows the economy’s real – acute – condition, to put it mildly.
At the same time the amount of gas used by the energy system grew by over 30% to 212 million cubic meters. It should be mentioned that the cost price of electricity generated from natural gas is much higher than the cost price of electricity generated by hydropower plants and the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant,” ‘Haykakan Zhamanak’ writes.
