Ombudsman: Violations of admission to special schools revealed
With the mediation of Education and Science Minister Armen Ashotian, Armenian Ombudsman Karen Andreasian gave instructions to check pupils’ documents at several special schools. The violations revealed during the checks have already been dealt with, the Office of Armenian Ombudsman reported.
“A child without any mental and physical problems was found to be attending Vagharshapat special school No 2 for mentally retarded children. He was also transferred to a comprehensive school, and four other pupils will receive certificates necessary to attend a special school.
Earlier, employees of the Ombudsman Staff found during their visits to special schools in regions that children with minor problems, in some cases - without any disability, study together with mentally challenged children at such schools. Studies done in this connection show that by sending their children to special schools, low-income parents solve problems related not only to their education, but also food, care, and lodgings, while school management ensure the necessary number of pupils in such a way.
The Ombudsman Staff highly appreciates cooperation with Ministry of Education and Science and looks forward to further joint work,” the Ombudsman said in a statement.
