Gyumri ex-mayor’s nephew gets 17 years in shooting case
The court of general jurisdiction in Armenia’s Shirak province announced its decision today in the criminal case of the shooting in Gyumri on April 23, 2013.
Vahe Ghukasyan, the nephew of ex-mayor of the city of Gyumri Vardan Ghukasyan, was sentenced to 17 years in prison.
The prosecutor had requested 22 year-imprisonment for Vahe Ghukasyan.
Vahe Ghulasyan’s lawyer, Hayk Alumyan, delivered a speech in defense of Ghukasyan, asking the court to acquit him. The defendant also made a speech.
Around 1:00 pm on April 23 the Gyumri city police station received information from a local hospital that two men, Harutyun Khachatryan and Artyom Karapetyan, were admitted to hospital with gunshot wounds. Karapetyan died in the hospital. The shooting occurred outside building No 54/6 on Shirakatsi Street.
The investigative unit of Shirak police opened a criminal case under Articles 104 and 235 of the Criminal Code. Vahe Ghukasyan was detained during the investigation. He confessed to the crime.
V. Ghukasyan said that during the shootout Artyom Karapetyan shot him in the hip.
