Cheating site Ashley Madison’s new drama might focus on Washington players
If the success of mega hits like “Scandal,” “The Good Wife,” and “House of Cards” are any indication, cheaters do prosper — at least on the small screen.
With that in mind, Ashley Madison, the online hook-up destination for folks already hitched, announced on Tuesday that the site is developing a scripted TV show about adultery in the digital age. The hour-long drama plans to take a peel-back-the-curtain peek at real life scandalous headlines.
“It used to be that if it bleeds, it leads, but I think now if it cheats, it leads,” said Noel Biderman, CEO of Avid Life Media, the company that owns Ashley Madison.
But don’t expect a “Law & Order” and “Scandal” mash-up. According to the Web site, Biderman, is “America’s foremost expert in the field of infidelity.” He said he wanted the show to do more than simply fictionalize high profile political affairs like those of former President Bill Clinton and retired Gen. David Petraeus.
“We don’t just want to recreate the story,” said Biderman, “we want to talk about the kind of people who move to a place like Washington. You have to be engineered for some level of risk.” And according to Biderman, if you’re a risk-taker in your professional career, you’re more likely to take risks in your personal life.
“We can explore infidelity in Washington without it having to be the president of the United States,” he explained.
Don’t believe him?
Paul C. Keable, Avid Life’s vice president of communications, said the site currently has 52,169 members in Washington compared with 38,000 in 2012, about a 38 percent increase in membership. More than 8 percent of those members hail from Capitol Hill, and most of these would-be cheaters log onto the site with government e-mail addresses, according to Keable.
The drama is currently in search of a head writer, but the production team already has ideas about the main character. He or she will be “slightly dark and, of course, conflicted,” said Matt Hornburg, co-CEO of marblemedia, the Toronto-based company partnering with Ashley Madison.
“It’s about lies, hidden truth and inner conflict,” said Hornburg.
The company hopes to go into production within the next two years, and, in that time, we’re sure there will be tons more material to crib from.
