PACE slams Azerbaijan’s actions
At the conclusion of its autumn session, the PACE adopted a resolution that positively assesses the introduction of an alternative military service in Armenia, Armenpress reported. The document says the reform is in line with European standards and marks the start of constitutional changes.
The PACE expressed concern over persecution of journalists and political activists in Azerbaijan. There has been a setback for fundamental human rights and liberties in Azerbaijan, according to the resolution.
The PACE recommends the Azerbaijani leadership to refrain from repressions against journalists and civil activists, ensure that the court system is not misused for political purposes, and to immediately free the imprisoned political prisoners.
The documents says that official Baku should implement decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, respect the basic human rights and freedoms, including freedom of speech and of assembly.
