Houthi insurgents seize major port city in Yemen
Houthi rebels have seized Hudeida, the second most important seaport in Yemen, a security official said Tuesday, according to RIA Novosti.
"Huthi militants are deployed across vital installations, including the airport and the port," a security official said Tuesday, as quoted by AFP.
According to the official, the Houthis met little resistance as they overran Hudeida.
The takeover came just weeks after Houthi rebels attacked Yemen's capital Sanaa. The insurgents are still in control of the entrances into Sanaa, as well as many residential buildings in the city.
The Houthis are the main opposition movement in Yemen. The group has been carrying out protests in the country since mid-August, demanding the resignation of the Yemeni government, which they say is corrupted and marginalizes the Shia community in the country.
