Joko Widodo becomes Indonesia’s new president
Joko Widodo was sworn in Monday as the first Indonesian president, not coming from the political elites of the country, RIA Novosti reported, citing the BBC.
“This is a historic moment for us all to move together, to work," Widodo was quoted as saying after reading his oath.
"Unity and working hand in hand are prerequisites for us to be a great nation. We will never become a great nation if we are stuck with division,” he added.
The 53-year old president was cheered by supporters in the capital Jakarta.
Among those who attended the ceremony were US Secretary of State John Kerry and Australia's Prime Minister Tony Abbott, according to the news outlet.
Widodo was the son of a carpenter, who later began exporting furniture from Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populated country.
