Republicans win control of US Senate
The Republican Party has taken control of the Senate in the US mid-term elections, increasing their power in the final years of President Barack Obama's presidency, the BBC reported.
After gains in Arkansas, Montana, South Dakota, West Virginia and Colorado, North Carolina clinched victory.
Mitch McConnell will become the Senate majority leader.
According to AP news agency, the party is also set to increase its majority in the lower House of Representatives.
Now they control both houses of Congress, the Republicans have the power to shut down Mr Obama's policies in the last two years of his term.
For the past year, political gridlock in Congress has reached historical levels and analysts say this win could make the situation even worse before the president poll in 2016.
