Expert: Constitutional Court decision is shameful fact
The recognition of Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) as constitutional by the Constitutional Court of Armenia is a shameful fact, expert of the Center for Political and International Studies Ruben Mehrabyan told journalists today.
There is nothing unusual and astonishing in that, the expert said adding that it is hard to overlook the circumstance that the agreement restricts Armenia’s sovereignty.
“Under Articles 1 and 2 of the Constitution, the Republic of Armenia is a sovereign, democratic state and the power belongs to the people, while in the EEU there is a commission whose decisions are mandatory for all the EEU member states. This commission is Russia, and if the executive and legislative bodies did not oppose that, it would be naïve to expect the Constitutional Court – like Hunan Avetisyan - to cover the gun’s embrasure with itself”, Mehrabyan said.
Another speaker at the press conference, associate professor of Yerevan State University’s Sub-department of Constitutional Law Vardan Aivazyan said that irrespective of its will, any state today participates in integration processes that are taking place so rapidly that the countries can make a superficial, intuitive assessment about them.
“There is no violation of the current Constitution of Armenia, but the question is whether this union will lead us to a bright future or push us into an abyss. In the sense of the current legal system, I share the Constitutional Court’s decision and believe that there are no violations concerning the procedures of joining that union,” V. Aivazyan noted.
