Businessman Levon Hayrapetyan hospitalized, his diagnosis confirmed
Businessman and Armenian public figure Levon Hayrapetyan, who is charged in Russia with complicity in embezzlement and money laundering in the Bashneft Company case, has been hospitalized.
Interfax news agency was informed on Wednesday that Hayrapetyan is receiving treatment in a hospital and will not appear in the court which was expected to examine the investigator’s application to extend his measure of restraint - house arrest.
L. Hayrapetyan lawyer said at the court sitting that Hayrapetyan was diagnosed with cancer.
“Mr. Hayrapetyan is now being treated in a clinic where his urinary bladder cancer diagnosis was confirmed,” the lawyer said.
Russian investigators are investigating a criminal case in connection with misappropriation and legalization of Bashneft shares. Criminal proceedings were started against L. Hayrapetyan, the head of Sistema Company Vladimir Yevtushenkov, and the ex-director of Bashneft Ural Rakhimov. Yevtushenkov is under house arrest, Rakhimov is wanted by the police.
Levon Hayrapetyan was detained by Russian Federal Security Service on July 15, 2014, at Moscow’s Demodedovo Airport after an ex-senator, Igor Izmestyev who is serving a life term, testified against him. On July 17 Hayrapetyan was taken into custody, and on October 3 he was placed under house arrest for health reasons.
