On the whole, ombudsman satisfied with human rights situation in Armenia
On Human Rights Day, the Office of Armenia’s Human Rights Defender held a consultation with the participation of Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan, Minister-Chief of the Government Staff David Harutyunyan, Education and Science Minister Armen Ashotyan, Justice Minister Hovhannes Manukyan, Police Chief Vladimir Gasparyan, and Chairman of the Constitutional Court Gagik Harutyunyan.
In the words of Human Rights Defender Karen Andreasyan, the abovementioned agencies have achieved progress in human rights protection. For example, the Constitutional Court of Armenia took in 2014 a number of decisions which “will become a scientific basis for the future and stem from society’s interests”.
K. Andreasyan said that the number of cases of violence has considerably declined in the police, and society started to perceive positively the image of the policeman.
“There is a problem against this positive background. The matter concerns clashes with protesters. We hope this phenomenon will be overcome in 2015,” Andreasyan noted.
He also spoke about positive changes in the army and in educational system where a law on inclusive education was adopted.
The ombudsman thanked D. Harutyunyan for his attention to problems at the Byureghavan boarding school.
