Aravot: Streets, squares, schools to be named after Ter-Petrosyan
The editor of ‘Aravot’ paper Aram Abrahamyan writes in connection with the 70th birthday of the first Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan that no doubt, he made a multitude of mistakes – like any other mortal, like any other president.
“But his biggest mistakes were his running for a second term in the 1996 presidential election and his return to politics in 2007. But he made both mistakes, being guided not by personal interests, but by his ideas about solutions of problems in Armenia. It is a fact that Ter-Petrosyan is currently “an ordinary oppositionist”. I am sure that former presidents, including the first Armenian president, should not be engaged in everyday politics – it “lightens” the weight of the institution of the presidency.
But these are trifles from a historical point of view and will be forgotten soon. For example, it matters little to Americans today what George Washington or Thomas Jefferson said after resignation. Streets, squares and schools will be named after Ter-Petrosyan in 30-40 years. The first president of the Third Republic of Armenia deserves this,” the paper’s editor writes.
