Michael Carrick: Tottenham win was three points – nothing more
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick claims while his side’s emphatic victory over Spurs was a good result, but it only amounts to another three points, as per the Manchester Evening News.
The Red Devils put in their best display of the season at Old Trafford on Sunday, brushing aside Mauricio Pochettino’s in-form Tottenham 3-0.
United’s goals came via Carrick, Marouane Fellaini and Wayne Rooney, who jokingly celebrated as if being knocked out following the emergence of footage depicting Stoke’s Phil Bardsley flooring him (via the Mirror).
The win ensured the three-time European champions remain on course for a top-four finish, ending the weekend’s fixtures just two points behind second-placed Manchester City – who suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Burnley.
But Liverpool’s win at the Liberty Stadium on Monday night means they remain just two points off United prior to the rivals’ huge clash at Anfield on Sunday.
And Liverpool’s close proximity to the Red Devils has seen Carrick remain firmly in game-mode, despite his side’s excellent victory against Spurs.
He said, as reported by the Manchester Evening News: “We won the game. Tottenham are a good side, we’ve beaten them and we’ve picked up an important three points. But it doesn’t count for anything more than that.
“It will give us confidence, of course. But in terms of what it means to anyone else it is not for me to answer. I think it is just more for us a big boost going into another big one next week.
“Sunday is a big game for a lot of reasons and that is probably all we can focus on at the moment.”
33-year-old Carrick has been in decent form this season – despite missing 14 games – and United have lost only twice when he has played.
