USA Today. Why is Kim Kardashian in Armenia?
Armenian American Kim Kardashian arrived in the capital of her ancestral homeland Wednesday, met by the usual chaos of jostling fans and journalists that accompanies her everywhere.
Why is she in Armenia? Kanye West was with her, along with their daughter North and Kim's sister Khloe.
Her rep, Ina Treciokas, says it's a long-planned family trip to the old country, and that it will be featured later on their reality show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
But their visit was seized upon by some Armenians as a way of drawing attention to the centennial of the much-disputed massacre of 1.5 million Armenians, commemorated every April.
The Associated Press reported she arrived in Yerevan, the capital, two weeks before April 24, when Armenia formally marks the killings by Ottoman Turks a century ago.
AP said Kardashian is expected to visit the vast complex in Yerevan that commemorates the victims.
But Treciokas said the family is in the country for the first time to get in touch with their Armenian roots. She said they expect to be back home by the time of the April 24 commemoration date.
Sister Khloe was tweeting and Instagraming about the trip.
"Armenia!!!! We're here!!!! (I wish there was an orange heart emoji so I can show the colors of the Armenian flag but the yellow heart will do for now," she captioned one picture.
What happened in Turkey and Armenia starting in 1915 is hotly debated to this day. Armenia calls the killings a genocide, a view widely supported by historians, scholars and most of the world.
But Turkey vehemently rejects the term, maintaining that the death figure is inflated, that many people on both sides died, and that the deaths were not the result of a deliberate decision to wipe out an entire people.
Most of the U.S. states, especially California where the Kardashians live and where Armenians are a politically significant voting block, accept the killings as genocide.
However, the federal government and the White House over the years have avoided using the term so as not to jeopardize U.S. access to ally Turkey's air space and bases.
The Kardashians' paternal ancestors emigrated to the U.S. in the late 19th century.
