Game of Thrones: How to avoid spoilers for the season five finale
The Game of Thrones season five finale was shown in the US last night but doesn't air in the UK until this evening.
According to people who've seen it (we haven't), there's an incredibly dramatic moment in the show that EVERYONE is talking about.
Unfortunately the internet is not confined by national borders, which means it’s AWASH with spoilers today as American viewers - and some sneaky Brits - churn out post-analysis of the action.
Here are some tips for staying safe from plot line giveaways online until the show is on at 9pm. After that, you're going to have to fend for yourself.
Download Unspoiler
This Chrome browser extension lets you enter in the names of shows or characters that you don’t want to read about online. Once you've set it up, the software will check any webs page you load and if it finds "Game of Thrones" mentioned it will replace the headline and article with a big warning label.
The tool works across all of your web activity - so any news or social networking sites you happen to use are protected.
When you’re ready to read about the show you can click a button for it to unblock everything again.
Be warned: this only works on your desktop browser, so you'll have to avoid using your mobile for a few hours.
Stay off Twitter
Twitter is a minefield of spoilers. We’d recommend staying off it altogether, or muting all of the relevant hashtags - but the latter will still leave you vulnerable to those who can't spell or don't tag their tweets properly.
Don't look at Facebook
Like Twitter, Facebook is a dangerous place to be today if you're trying not to ruin the surprise of show - particularly if you have any American friends. It's simply not worth the risk.
Wear headphones at work
Serious Game of Thrones fans can find ways to watch the show before it airs - that means you could overhear a water-cooler conversation that gives the Game (of Thrones) away Similarly non-fans can read and comment on headlines without realising the seriousness of their transgression. The only solution is to wear noise cancelling headphones all day.
Disconnect altogether
This isn't the most practical solution given that so many of us rely on the internet for our jobs, but if you are REALLY serious about avoiding spoilers, you have to avoid the internet. And other people. We’d suggesting building your own Faraday cage and waiting there watching old episodes of Game of Thrones until it comes to 9pm.
