Constitutional amendments in Armenia should be made through referendum: meeting of PM, NA Chairman takes place
Chairman of the Armenian National Assembly Ara Babloyan and Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met on Monday to discuss domestic political situation in the country. The meeting has been initiated by the NA Chairman.
As a result of discussions over a number of issues the heads of legislative and executive powers registered that irrespective of political views each person in Armenia has a right of freedom of speech and expression of different opinion.
The parties also registered that the independence of courts is the key guarantee for ensuring justice in the country, thus the mechanism of division and balancing the legislative, executive and judicial powers must not be violated at any case.
They agreed that Armenia’s judicial system has not exhausted itself but in case the political forces agree over the necessity of creation “transitional justice” institution it should be done through corresponding constitutional and legislative changes but by no way harming the justice.
Speaking about snap parliamentary elections, it has been stated that they should be conducted within a year. It has been stated that referendum is among the most democratic mechanisms for the conduction of snap elections through constitutional reforms as the to-be amended Constitution has been adopted by a referendum.
Nevertheless, the parties agreed that the selection of each of the variants should be done as a result of wide public and political discussions.
