Human rights protection issues in sidelines of criminal cases on March 1, 2008 and wiretapping case discussed
Meeting with delegation headed by the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatovic took place today in Armenia’s Prosecutor General’s Office.
Press service of the office reported that issues on domestic violence cases’ control were discussed during the meeting.
Deputy prosecutor general Davit Melkonyan briefed on the legislative changes carried out for raising the efficiency of fighting against domestic violence. According to them, the prosecutor’s office may file a criminal case even if the victim does not submit complain application.
It has also been stressed that with the instruction of Prosecutor General’s Office standards simplifying grounds for filing criminal case and assessing domestic violence crime features have been worked out which essentially promote the increase of quality and efficiency of investigations of such cases.
During the meeting the participants referred to the human rights protection issues in the sidelines of March 1, 2008 criminal cases, wiretapping case between heads of NSS and SIS.
Deputy prosecutor general Hayk Aslanyan said that high ranking officials have been involved in the March 1 criminal cases and active preliminary investigation is being carried out for objective revelation.
Referring to the wiretapping case, the deputy prosecutor general said that two criminal cases have been filed and investigations are carried out over violating the secrecy of phone conversations as well as possible abuse of power.
