Discussions over Electoral Code register regress: ex DM Vigen Sargsyan
The hastiness in conduction of snap parliamentary elections is agreed with executive power’s belief that favorable conditions have been created for it to conduct elections now, former defense minister Vigen Sargsyan said speaking to reporters today, after the meeting with Armenia’s First Vice Prime Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Republican party members.
“Today the political force which heads the executive power believes that favorable conditions have been created for it to conduct snap parliamentary elections and undertakes a step which harms the democracy and the process of formation of political parties in Armenia,” Sargsyan said.
He said the discussions over Electoral Code as compared with the previous discussions which resulted in 4+4+4 format this time were a regress.
Sargsyan noted that not final variant of the Electoral Code has been sent to Venice Commission. “Ararat Mirzoyan said today that they will not even manage to receive the response from the commission. It is disrespect toward Venice Commission. It would have been more right not to send it and explain with extraordinary situation,” he said.
Vigen Sargsyan said there is no decision whether the Republican party will participate in snap parliamentary elections or not but his opinion is that parties are being created for fighting for power, for coming to power, for losing power, for becoming opposition and again fighting for power.
“The party which is cleaned away from the political field after losing power is party of adventurers,” Sargsyan said, adding that the Republican party has clear position over important issues of the country.
