Amendments in the Electoral Code not an end in itself: Republican MP
The NA session took place today thanks to the presence of the Republican party lawmakers, faction MP Armen Ashotyan said, speaking to reporters today.
“The current authorities do not manage to make a clear political decision on what they want – snap elections, or amended Electoral Code,” Ashotyan said.
He stressed that even if the Electoral Code is adopted, with the absence of political consensus it will contradict the classic democratic rules.
“Today we seem not to feel it. We are all happy, we are post-revolutionary, we are in euphoria, the PM will make a live video, say something and everything will be ok. But will it solve the issue?” the MP noted.
Ashotyan stressed that no velvet revolution may change the rules of European classic democracy.
“No matter how many times Ararat Mirzoyan goes to Venice, no matter how many times Nikol Pashinyan makes live videos, it will not change, it is classic political rule,” the lawmaker stressed.
Citing Venice Commission Chairman Gianni Buquicchio Ashotyan said serious changes in the Electoral Code cannot be made if there is a wish of hasty snap parliamentary elections.
“You may make it happen by putting pressures on the lawmakers or convincing or coming and asking, but it will not be the one you have promised to the Armenian people,” Ashotyan said.
The Republican faction MP stressed that the amendments in the Electoral Code are not an end in itself and added that it is even weird to ask to adopt it in 24 hour time at the second reading.
