EU-Armenia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee calls on Armenian, Azerbaijani authorities conduct high-level dialogue for peaceful settlement of Karabakh conflict
The first session of the EU-Armenia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee that took place on October 24 in Strasburg chaired by the co-chairs of the committee Armen Ashotyan and Sajjad Karim adopted a conclusive statement and proposals based on a corresponding article of the Armenia-EU Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement, NA’s press service reports.
The adopted document reflects the current nature of the Armenia-EU relations and positions over a number of important spheres.
In particular, the document refers to the domestic political situation in Armenia and calls on all the political forces to display restraint to avoid growth of tension and refrain from any manifestation of hatred, intolerance not to weaken the country’s stability and people’s unity.
The Parliamentary Cooperation Committee also calls on the Armenian authorities to ensure democratic, fair and transparent snap parliamentary elections in December giving all the political forces an opportunity to carry out their election campaign properly in a calm atmosphere.
The Committee also urges the Armenian authorities to consider and implement the proposals of the Venice Commission and OSCE/ODHIR relating to the Electoral Code reforms.
Referring to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement issue, the Committee expresses regret over continuous loss of human lives as result of it.
The document stresses that the periodical violation of ceasefire regime which takes lives of soldiers and civilians from both parties impedes the social-economic development of the region.
The Committee calls on the authorities of Armenia and Azerbaijan to conduct high level talks and stay committed to creation of reliable atmosphere and dialogue for easing the tension on the Line of Contact and undertake necessary measures for peaceful settlement of the conflict.
The adopted document also refers to the process of international recognition of the Armenian genocide.
