Introducing amendments to Electoral Code 42 days before elections feels like “mocking democracy:” MP Armen Ashotyan
The Armenian authorities have found a way to organize another discussion of the failed bill of amendments in the Electoral Code, Republican party MP Armen Ashotyan said at the extraordinary sitting today.
The MP stressed that there is no political consensus over the issue.
“The Republican party is going to vote against it. All the opinions as if it is consensus minus 1 are false,” he said, calling not to describe different opinion as sabotage.
“It is not sabotage, it is a political position,” he noted.
He said that introducing the Electoral Code amendments as democratic reforms is like mocking democracy. “You will not see any Council of Europe member country which amends Election Code just 42 days before the elections. It is not being done. If approved, Armenia will become the first country to have done it,” he said.
Ashotyan stressed that he is more than convinced that all the levers have been activated for ensuring g today’s adoption of the bill.
