The guilty in death of Mher Yeghiazaryan should be punished: human rights advocate
There is a necessity of proper, objective examination of each death case and this examination will take place, human rights advocate Artur Sakunts told Aysor.am, referring to the statement of a German MP that Armenia must carefully study the circumstances of death of Haynews.am website coordinator Mher Yeghiazaryan.
He said the Council of Europe Committee for the Prevention of Tortures refers not only to Mher Yeghiazaryan’s case but to the death of any person in detention.
Asked whether the response of the European establishments is normal, Artur Sakunts said such response was expected.
“It is necessary to understand the grounds of the demand. Is there a concern that the investigative bodies will not carry out investigation? I think there is no such concern. The guilty in the case must be punished,” the advocate said.
Sakunts stressed that as of now Armenia’s international reputation is very high and its future depends on how the authorities will display themselves.
Earlier the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s Twitter page reported that Human rights Chair Margret Kiener has raised the case of Mher Yeghiazaryan, who tragically died in prison following hunger strike in Armenia, with Armenian Ombudsman. She also said that untimely death in custody of a prisoner is concerning. Further information on the case is important.
German MP Evrim Zomer also voiced the case saying that he is shocked to hear about Yeghiazaryan’s death.
