Armenia has no intention to participate in military actions in Syria: Armenia's PM, DM make contradicting statements
Armenia has sent a humanitarian mission to Syria, Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated at the NA today, in response to the question of the Bright Armenia faction MP Arman Babajanyan.
The MP was interested whether the Armenian side is not targeting the Armenian community with it and whether the Armenian side may be engaged in military actions there at some moment and when Armenia will leave the country.
“We have sent humanitarian mission. As to the response of the defense minister it is necessary to understand what question was voiced and in what context he made such a statement. We have no such plans,” Pashinyan said.
On February 12 Armenia’s Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan, in response to Aysor.am’s question about mission in Syria, stated that Armenia is carrying out the mission in accordance with the law.
A reporter asked Tonoyan to refer to the Armenian mission sent to Syria, noting that some contradicting statements have been voiced over it.
“I do not know what you mean by saying contradicting statements,” the minister said.
Aysor.am reporter asked to comment on the information that Armenian mission has been sent to Syria as a result of an oral arrangement.
This was stated by spokesperson for Armenian PM Vladimir Karapetyan.
Armenia’s DM stated that the Armenian side has received a written request from Syrian de facto authorities on sending humanitarian mission to Syria.
“In addition, I will say that in case of necessity for Armenia to participate in military activities in Syria, Armenia will do it in accordance with the law too. Of course, at the same time we will try to cooperate with the non-parliamentary forces while making such decision,” Tonoyan said.
Earlier today, in response to Aysor.am's question on U.S. position on Armenian mission in Syria, U.S. Department of State stated that the United States does not support any cooperation between Armenia and Russia for this mission.
