Having diplomatic representation in Israel stems from Armenia’s interests: political analyst
If having embassy in Israel stems from our interests, we must do it, political analyst Tevan Poghosyan told Aysor.am, referring to the statement of deputy foreign minister Grigor Hovhannisyan that Armenia is considering opening embassy in Israel.
Asked whether the Armenia side will do it irrespective the circumstance that Israel sells weapon to Azerbaijan, the political analyst said that Armenia must do everything for Israel to halt it.
“We must reach such level of relations with Israel to make it halt selling weapon to Azerbaijan. This is the diplomatic skill - to be able to overcome each difficulty and use it for the sake of Armenia’s interests. I hope that if during these 30 years we managed to overcome many difficulties, we will manage to overcome another too. The more the process is speeded up, the right. In general, we must have embassies in all countries with which we have diplomatic relations,” Poghosyan said.
Asked whether Israel has reciprocal interest to have own diplomatic representation in Yerevan, Poghosyan said that Armenia and Israel have accredited diplomats, thus it is illogical for them not to have residence.
“I am convinced that if Armenia opens an embassy in Israel, the latter will respond with the same step. It is in our interests to have diplomatic representation in Israel and work intensively with that country,” Poghosyan said, adding that intensive works should be carried out in Russia as well where Armenia has an embassy but this fact does not impede it to sell weapon to Azerbaijan.
As to whether the initiative to open embassy in Israel is not late, the political analyst said what was not done previously does not mean it should not be done in future too.
In an interview to The Jerusalem Post Armenia’s deputy foreign minister Grigor Hovhannisyan said that Armenia is considering opening an embassy in Israel in order to take ties between the two countries to the “next level.”
