Golan issue to escalate situation in the region: expert

The issue of Golan Heights raised by U.S. President Donald Trump will seriously escalate the situation in the region. It is obvious that one cannot expect stabilization of the situation by one-sided steps, expert in Iranian affairs Vardan Voskanyan told Aysor.am, referring to Trump’s statement on possible recognition of Golan Heights as part of Israel.

“Interests of different states collide and Trump’s administration seems to be guided by Israeli interests only,” the expert said.

As to whether such statement may result in serious clashes between the parties, Voskanyan said that hardly war situation be created but territorial issues are not excluded because of “apple of discourse” Golan Heights.

Referring to the Iranian factor, the expert said that its presence in south part of Syria is noticeable.

“If not direct presence but mediated. Israel and its ally USA are rather concerned with it. If we imagine Syria without Iranian support, it is obvious that this state would probably did not exist instead there would have been the domination of extreme Islamist structures,” he said.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trumo stated that time has come to recognize Golan Heights part of Israel.

He said they are of extreme strategic significance and are important for the security of Israeli state and the region.

Israeli PM thanked Trump for the readiness.
