Municipal elections showed Turkish people tired of Erdogan and his party: expert
Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s party Justice and Development lost in the municipal elections in Turkey’s biggest cities Ankara and Istanbul. This defeat has shown that the Turkish society has become tired of Erdogan, director of Oriental Studies Institute, expert in Turkish sciences Ruben Safrastyan told Aysor.am, referring to the municipal elections held in Turkey on March 31.
“As to concrete Istanbul, Erdogan’s party representative Binali Yildirim was almost to win, but the picture sharply changed just in the past week,” Safrastyan said.
The results of elections showed that Turkish voters changed their intention.
“If previously the Turkish voters were guided by the conditions of roads and garbage removal issues, now they prefer candidates for other things. Political preferences and emotions now came forth. The population of big cities showed that they are bored with Erdogan’s party and Erdogan personally. That is why people of Ankara and Istanbul preferred opposition party,” he said.
Ruben Safrastyan did not exclude that after the years the same tendencies will come forth in small towns as well.
“Parliamentary elections are due in Turkey in November, more probably Erdogan forecasts the changes and has focused on municipal elections to understand in what direction the changes take place,” Safrastyan said, not excluding that Turkish authorities may start actions in Syria to attract voters.
On March 31 municipal elections took place in Turkey. Despite the victory, Erdogan’s Justice and Development party has lost in Ankara and Istanbul, Turkey’s biggest cities.
