Council of Europe to support Armenia’s reform agenda: Thorbjørn Jagland
The Council of Europe will do the utmost to support the reform agenda of the new government of Armenia, Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland said at a joint news conference with Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Strasburg.
“We have already seen that the new government has agenda of reforms which is very important for us. It is very important to see how the opposition treats it, how mass media covers the actions, especially those addressed to fighting against corruption,” Jagland said, asked what new proposals the Council of Europe has for Armenia after the political changes in the country.
“The independent mass media, judicial system are very important, and I think this is the agenda of the new government. We will do everything to support it,” Jagland said.
Wrapping up the news conference Armenia’s PM handed to the Council of Europe Secretary General the certificate on naming one of the squares in Yerevan as Europe’s Square. In response Jagland said, “Armenia is a European country and has always been such.”
