U.S. Secretary of State gives Artsakh legitimate right to establish sovereignty over Azerbaijani lost territories
Head of the European Research Center Artur Ghazinyan considers the statement of U.S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo about Golan Heights “unprecedentedly favorable” for the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement.
During the hearing in U.S. Senate Pompeo said that "Israel ended up with the Golan Heights as a result of it having been attacked. They were under defense. And they defended themselves. And they retained that terrain to continue to defend themselves from the murderous regimes in Syria," he said.
“Mike Pompeo made a statement giving Artsakh legitimate right to establish sovereignty in the territories lost by Azerbaijan during 1992-1994 war imposed on Artsakh. It is necessary to register that a new reality has been established in the international right which claims to turn into source of international customary right,” Ghazinyan wrote in Facebook.
“According to this reality, if as a result of obvious aggression against it, the defending state succeeds in occupying internationally recognized territory of the aggressor state for its own security, the defending state gets legitimate right to demand from the international community to recognize its sovereignty toward these territories,” Ghazinyan wrote, stressing that Armenian and Artsakh diplomats and exerts must by all means use this precedent to establish sovereignty in the territory especially in case when these territories are of serious significance for the protection of right of Artsakh people to live.
