Recognition of Armenian genocide by Italy to serve an example for other EU countries: expert
Italy is a serious state and the adoption of resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide should have bothered Turkey, expert in Turkish affairs Hakob Chakryan told Aysor.am, referring to the statement of Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu that the resolution has no force.
“Before making such step, Italian parliament has probably calculated the confrontation opportunities of official Ankara. We should remember that Italy is a Catholic state and Rome Pope has big influence on all Catholic states and Italy in particular,” the expert said, adding that the Rome Pope’s statement on the 100th anniversary of Armenian genocide can have positive impact for many EU countries to recognize the historic truth. The expert also reminded that representatives of Italian parliament have many times voiced that Turkey must not become member of the EU.
Hakob Chakryan said that if influential country like Italy has recognized the Armenian genocide, it means the possibility of recognition by other EU countries grows.
“The statement of the Turkish foreign minister that adoption of resolution on Armenian genocide has no significance is being voiced since 2000. It means that Turkey has nothing else to say. The authorities and people of Turkey know very well that Armenian genocide was committed and that it was committed in the most brutal way,” the expert conclude.
