Issue on Armenian genocide addressed to ambassadorial nominee, nothing extraordinary should be expected: expert
Another discussion of the issue of recognition of the Armenian Genocide at the U.S. Senate is agreed with the approval of candidacy of David Michael Satterfield in the post of U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, political expert Suren Sargsyan told Aysor.am. It is not a separate initiative addressed to the recognition of the genocide.
He said it is a normal process in the United States, and the senators always have opportunity to address questions to potential ambassadorial candidates.
“In this concrete case senator Menendez used the opportunity and addressed questions to the candidate. This is not a separate process but a common proceeding. There is no extraordinary thing, and no one should expect anything,” Sargsyan said.
“The president nominates ambassadorial candidate, and the Senate approves him/her. There are many cases when ambassadorial candidates to Armenia and Azerbaijan were being questioned for quite a long time before being appointed in the post,” he said.
The issue on recognition of the Armenian genocide was voiced by Senator Robert Menendez at the hearing in U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations on Thursday.
The Senator addressed a number of questions to the ambassadorial nominee, including ones relating to Armenian genocide.
