Decision of Italian parliament on recognizing Armenian Genocide of political nature: diplomat
The adoption of decision on recognizing Armenian Genocide by Italian parliament on April 10 is a political document with which the Italian parliament gives its assessment to the events of early 20th century in the Ottoman Empire describing them as genocide and urging the government to officially recognize the Armenian genocide and give it an international publicity, Armenian ambassador to Italy Viktoria Baghdasaryan told Aysor.am, adding that the decision is important as it expresses the joint opinion of all the political forces represented in the Italian parliament.
“As I have noted the decision is a document of political nature, thus there is no need to transfer it from the legislative power to executive one. At the discussion of the initiatives at the Chamber of Deputies the government official as a rule makes a speech, who irrespective of his position does not directly influence on the right of the deputies to express their will,” the ambassador said.
Asked what response followed by the Embassy of Turkey after the adoption of the resolution and whether some actions are envisaged by the Turkish community, Baghdasryan said, “Immediately after the discussion of the decision on recognizing the Armenian Genocide Italian ambassador in Ankara was summoned to the government of Turkey for clarifications. Turkish ambassador to Italy requested immediate meeting with the chairman of the International Relations Committee of the Chamber of Deputies Marta Grande and the government representatives,” the ambassador said.
The adoption of the decision was followed with the publication of statement of the Turkish Foreign Ministry at the Facebook page of the Turkish embassy in Italy in regards with the resolution.
“As of now I have no information about the plans of the Turkish community to carry out protest actions,” the ambassador stated.
