Russia not to satisfy Mihran Poghosyan’s application on getting political asylum: Nikolay Baghdasaryan

My Step lawmaker, former lawyer Nikolay Baghdasaryan expressed conviction that Russia will not give political asylum to ex-lawmaker Mihran Poghosyan.

One of Russian mass media, citing Poghosyan’s Russian lawmaker Mikhail Yamchitski reported that the ex-lawmaker has submitted necessary documents to corresponding Russian bodies.

“The motion has been officially submitted. The decision on providing political asylum is made by the commission affiliated to the Russian president. I think there are enough grounds for it, Mihran Poghosyan is being persecuted in his homeland with political motives,” the lawyer said.

Speaking to Aysor.am, Nikolay Baghdasaryan said his experience shows that Poghosyan’s application may not even examined, but even if examined it will not be satisfied with few reasons.

“For applying for political asylum it is necessary for Russia to admit that there are issues in Armenia regarding political views. Mihran Poghosyan cannot get political asylum. His application will not be discussed as the legislation of that country does not allow it,” Baghdasaryan said.

He said Poghosyan cannot get political asylum as he was to apply to the authorities of that country immediately after crossing the border.

“The demand of applying immediately was not satisfied. Even if he was not a defendant, even if he applied not for political asylum but just an asylum, his applications would not have been discussed in accordance with international agreements,” he said.
