Sevan Lake taken to annihilation: environmentalist
Despite having all the programs necessary for protection of Lake Sevan, the lake is being taken to annihilation, environmentalist Karine Danielyan told Aysor.am, referring to the facts that the lake again "blossomed" with seaweeds and its level reduced by two centimeters as compared with the same span of the past year.
“The lake’s waters' cleaning stations were not repaired. A big volume of dirty waters continue flowing to Sevan. The beach cleaning works are not being implemented properly. It is a very serious issue as on the background of water’s level growth the beach was not cleaned properly. A big volume of garbage, uncut trees and bushes remained under water. All this had a negative impact on Sevan,” the environmentalist said.
Danielyan said another issue is the negative balance registered thrice since 2013.
“During these years additional waters have been taken from the lake which was sensitively perceived by it. The import of clean water to Sevan will contribute to its self-cleaning, improve its water quality,” the environmentalist said, noting that not undertaking special measures during the summer heat result in spread of seaweeds.
Danielyan urged the people not turn the rivers feeding Sevan into garbage and not throw anything in them as they will appear in the lake.
Last year as well the lake was full of seaweeds which is dangerous for swimming. The Health Ministry was urging people not to swim in such areas as it may cause different diseases.
