Tusk’s unbalanced statements must give Armenian authorities food for thought: expert
The statements of the chairman of the Council of Europe Donald Tusk about Artsakh conflict must give the Armenian authorities food for thought, director of Hayatsk applied policy and research think tank Anna Karapetyan told Aysor.am, commenting on the statements voiced by Tusk in Azerbaijan and Armenia.
“The most worrying part is that during the meeting with Ilham Aliyev in Baku the Council of Europe president stressed that the EU supports Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity while in Yerevan he did not stress the significance of the right of people to self-determination and just cited the Helsinki final act,” Anna Karapetyan stated.
She said the official Baku really exerts serious efforts to “extort” this formulation from the EU high-ranking officials while the Armenian side does not demand preserving the balance and speaking about right of people to self-determination in Armenia.
“It would not have been so worrying if the EU-Azerbaijan agreement was not in the phase of agreeing definitions. It is not a secret that Baku does not spare an effort to outline the principle of territorial integrity in the document,” the expert said.
Karapetyan stressed that the newly appointed EU Foreign Policy responsible Joseph Borel is also a passionate advocate of territorial integrity right and was against Catalonia’s independence. She stressed that this circumstance may create favorable situation for Azerbaijan, thus Armenia must be very cautious.
